Acknowledgment of Risk, Polaris Project Field Course

Applicant’s Name:  _________________________________

The Polaris Project Field Course will be held near the town of Cherskiy, north of the Arctic Circle in Eastern Siberia.  The Arctic is a beautiful but unforgiving environment – these characteristics are particularly true for the Siberian Arctic.   Caution must also be practiced in Moscow and Yakutsk, cities that we will visit as we travel to and from Cherskiy.

During the field course students will work outside for many hours each day, 5-7 days per week, in potentially cold and rainy whether.  Hiking over rough terrain will be required on some days.  Other days will be spent on small boats on lakes or rivers.  Life jackets will be provided, but students must provide their own clothing suitable for use in cold, wet conditions.

Basic first aid (i.e., Band-Aids and aspirin) will be available at all times.  More advanced medical care is available in Cherskiy, but serious medical conditions would require evacuation to Moscow or the United States.  Because of the remoteness of our field course, students will need to take extra precautions to avoid any injury.  Students must also ensure that you have sufficient personal health insurance to cover hospitalization and emergency medical evacuation that may be necessary.

Applicant Agreement and Signature:

I have read and understand the above Acknowledgment of Risk.  I will conduct myself in a manner to minimize risk of injury and will notify course directors of any conditions or activities that I consider unsafe.
