Apply

Eligible undergraduate students interested in participating in the Polaris Project Siberian field course should complete their application by February 1, 2008. To apply you must:

  • Be an undergraduate at one of the participating institutions graduating after 2008 and enrolled in an associated course in winter or spring
  • Discuss your application with the team member at your home institution
  • Write an application essay (see instructions below)
  • Fill out the application form and upload your essay
  • Arrange for a letter of recommendation to be sent by February 1, 2008 to: letters{at]thepolarisproject.org. The letter should be written by somebody that knows your intellectual potential and capacity to work in the field. The letter should not be written by the team member at your home institution

The field course in summer 2008 will take place from approximately July 3 – July 30. Approximately six students will be selected for the field class in 2008 and ~14 students participating in subsequent years.

Expenses associated with travel, room, and board will be covered by the project.  We will also pay for your Russian visa application fees, but each student will be responsible for obtaining their own passport (valid until at least 2009).  Each student participant in the field course will also receive a stipend ($1500).  There are no tuition or fees associated with the field course.

We seek a diverse group of participants and will do our best to avoid the temptation of simply selecting the students with the best GPAs.  Therefore, your essay (~2 pages long) and letter of recommendation are critical elements of the application.  Though the content of the essay is your choice, some questions you might consider addressing are:

  • Why are you interested in the Polaris Project?
  • Why do you think you’d benefit from participation in the field course?
  • Why would your participation enrich the experience of other course participants?

Remember, we seek a diverse, mature, synergistic, cooperative, and fun group – How will you help us achieve that goal?

Please read the following documents describing risks associated with the field program and a code of conduct agreement.  If accepted to the program, you will be required to agree to and sign both of these forms.  Please contact us with any questions.
